How It Works

Everything is computed ahead of time with astronomy-engine, so this page is static files only: no server, no tracking, no API.

  • Eclipse visibility per country: Each country is covered with sample points about 55 km apart (Natural Earth outlines, plus points along the borders so small countries are covered too). For every eclipse the Sun and Moon positions are computed every two minutes, and each point checks whether the eclipse is in progress while the Sun (or Moon) is above its horizon. A country’s entry is its best spot: the maximum obscuration, and the window in which the eclipse is visible from somewhere in the country.
  • Meteor showers: Peaks come from the solar longitudes published by the International Meteor Organization, turned into a date and time for each year.
  • Everything else: Seasons, moon phases, planetary oppositions, elongations and transits come straight from astronomy-engine.

Times are good to a few minutes, which is plenty for a calendar. For planning where exactly to stand during totality, use a dedicated eclipse map.
